In Search of Big Blue

Having quickly exhausted anything mildly of interest in the coastal town of Unawatuna, I learned that just down the road, in a town called Mirissa, one could hire a boat and go blue whale watching. Yes, I thought, blue whales! The prospect excited me because 1) I had never seen a blue whale and there are only a handful of places where one can catch site of these, the largest organisms that have ever existed—and 2) it wasn’t Unawatuna. Hyena Cult, Ethiopia — Vancouver Island Photographer

I took this picture outside the Ethiopian city of Harar, near the Somalian border. The ceremony takes place every night just outside the walled city gates. Zebras in the Serengeti, Tanzania – Vancouver Island Travel Photographer

Skittish zebras at a waterhole. Safety in numbers, zebras are pack animals. With predators lurking on land and in the water, the life of a zebra seems to be a nervous one. When one moves, they all move and keep running back and forth to the water. Perfect for a photographer – just sit with a long lens and shoot away. I love the dynamism and their synchronous movement. You can see more Serengeti images here. Bye for now. Gordon […]

With predators on land (lions and leopards) and in the water (crocodiles), zebras are a nervous bunch and are constantly on the move. There is safety in numbers so the zebras move together, sometimes as if they were choreographed.  As they darted back and forth from the waterhole, I sat there with a long lens and shot away. During the dry season, you […]

Penguins In The Feature Gallery

Everybody loves penguins, right? [photoshelter-img width=’600′ height=’420′ i_id=’I0000RI5YDDSvBtI’ buy=’1′] I do, too. So much so that I thought it would be fun to celebrate our southern feathered friends with a feature gallery of their own. Hope you like the collection. These guys live in one extreme place. Hats off to the mighty penguin. Click here to see the gallery. Gordon Ross
