Nootka Island, BC’s West Coast Paradise
Nootka is one of the spectacular gems of British Columbia’s wild west coast. Recently, Mike Blake of Sea Peak Adventures and I did some hiking along the coast. The boat journey to Nootka began with a 45-minute run out of Gold River. We arrived in Plumper Harbour on Nootka, where we took some gnarly logging roads across the island to our accommodations at Nootka Island Cabins. The cabins are located at Beano Creek, which is named after the amazing little pebbles that cover the sweeping beach at Beano. What a wild spot it is. As you wander the coast, the density and the diversity of the intertidal life flows around you. It’s a place where you can feel the Great Spirit in the trees, the ocean and all its amazing creatures.
As I sat there on the beach taking in the wonder of it all, the next thought was how vulnerable this complex ecosystem would be to an oil spill. If you want to learn more, you can check out notankers.ca to find out about the issues affecting our wild west coast.
Bye for now.
