Photography Slideshow Highlighting Sri Lanka

There’s a photography slideshow happening in my studio tonight!

Since my return from Nootka Island, I’ve been meaning to post an image from that adventure and promise I will. But, I’ve been busy getting things ready for the photography slideshow that’s all about Sri Lanka. I can’t wait to share this incredible place through my lens.

Unfortunately, this event is sold out. But, this is the first of our new travel series. More details on this series are coming, and will be posted in advance here, and on our Facebook page.

Over the years, I’ve traveled to nearly 100 countries capturing the beauty of this planet and those who inhabit it. I look forward to sharing my images and stories with you.

Back to work!

Professional Portraits

In the fast-paced world of the web and business, you have exactly a millisecond to capture your online audience’s attention.

But as much as you have to grab it quickly, the visual nature of the the web delivers awesome possibilities to do it really well. Strong photography can be a big part of that wow factor that pulls the eyes in and gets people clicking.

If you’re selling a product or service that is an extension of your own personal brand, then a compelling professional portrait can act to motivate people to consider you over others. You need to catch their attention so they can find out who you are and what you’re offering.

Most of us are influenced by the packaging of a product. It’s why a well-designed, engaging package sells more than a poorly designed one despite the fact that they might be selling the same thing. Most of us will gravitate to elements that please our eyes; it’s the human way.

I find the featured image alluring because the lighting and slight angle of her head act to define her face. But mostly, it’s the look in her eye that works for me. It brings me right in.

Or check out the following photo:

It’s fun. It’s dynamic. And it catches your eye. The sky is the limit. Whatever your story, or brand, photography is an amazing way to express it.

And we humans like to look at other humans. It’s the human way.

You can check out more of my portraits here.

Dig the Mossi King’s yellow shoes—what a hipster.

The King himself is a pretty important fellow—he has over 6 million subjects. I shot some portraits of him as well; it was the obligatory thing to do.

But what really intrigued me were the attendants who sat at his feet. Every time the king would say something, the three minions (the other two are sitting next to the man wearing purple) would snap their fingers like exclamation marks at the end of his sentences. The whole moment was quite bizarre. First off, to see people literally sitting at the king’s feet, and secondly, to hear nothing from them except the snapping of their fingers.

Our planet has some wild customs.

Bye for now.

Mali’s average life-expectancy is 53; poverty mercilessly grinds people down.

The Recycler’s Market is on the outskirts of Bamako, the capital of Mali. Here, metal waste is recycled into useful products from car parts to cooking utensils. It’s amazing what resourceful people can do with so little.

I just had to share this.

I love great street photography because of the way it can frame the mundane as something special. For me, accomplished street photography highlights the profound nature of our daily moments.

My friend Terri sent me the link to a blog post on the photographer, Vivian Maier, who captured some quintessential moments of everyday American life from the mid-50s to the early-90s.

And to think that, during her life, she didn’t show her images to anyone. It’s so cool that these images were found and are now displayed. You can read all about her in the blog post.

Here’s a link to www.vivianmaier.com, a website dedicated to her work.

I’d be interested in hearing your thoughts about her work.

The fun that you can have with digital cameras.

This shot uses a mix of natural light as seen in the background sky, and artificial small-strobe light which is projected solely onto the subject.

The beauty of working with both light sources is that you can expose for each one. If I had relied on the Automatic or Program setting of my camera, the result would have been the-deer-in-the-headlights-phenomena, which is, well, boring.

The added oomph in this photo comes from a perfectly lit model up against a slightly underexposed, colour-skewed sky. To my eyes, it gives a slightly 3-dimensional effect.

So, to get this shot, I exposed for both light sources, and I mucked around with the camera’s white balance. Cool effect and it’s not rocket science.

We’ll be touching on these kind of subjects in our upcoming Photo Workshop Series soon to be announced.

Bye for now.

Faces are my favourite subjects.

Not only is each face fantastically unique, but each person’s face changes constantly making for endless photographic possibilities.

Take this man for example. What a great face and from what I could see, he lived in deep poverty, in a country with a tragic history of genocide, war and lingering landmines. But despite it all, he managed a kind, inviting expression. And Cambodia is filled with such expressions. A testament to the resilience of the human spirit?

Whatever his source of strength, it’s deeply humbling.

Bye for now.

The Marina Bay Sands Hotel in Singapore struck me as odd and fascinating. Talk about conflicted.

I mean, you can’t help but marvel at the genius behind the construction, but why is there a ship’s hull on top of a building? Incongruous? I think so. But then again, the structure is a casino-hotel and if Vegas is any guide, the more outlandish, the better. Maybe people bet more in quirky spaces? Or maybe, it symbolizes the casino sailing away with your cash? Who knows? But the thing does catch your attention. Those are people on deck of the “ship”, and the view is awesome. In a previous post, you can check out the infinity pool located on the fifty-seventh floor.

Here’s a shot of the interior during the day. Yes, it’s mostly air; hopefully, they got the engineering right.

The women with the instruments were playing classical Chinese music and it sounded amazing in the open space, wafting everywhere.

It always amazes me at the amount of cash and energy that gambling attracts; this entire edifice exists because of it.

Bye for now.
